Eek! A mouse!!   September 2nd, 2010

Our dreams bring us messages every night, messages about our relationships, our career, our personal goals and even our health. It’s always fascinating to me how our dreaming mind chooses to bring those messages to us. Sometimes it brings the message in the form of a celebrity, and sometimes in the form of a person we knew from long ago. When it comes to dreams, “You never know what you’re gonna get” – to quote Forrest Gump. My favorite dream messenger is the animal. American Indians believe we all have an animal spirit guide that helps us walk through life. This is especially true when it comes to our dreams. The animals that appear in your dreams are there to help you with your current circumstances, no matter how annoying the animal may be…

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream that I was cleaning in my kitchen under my ex-husband’s stove and two mice bit my hands, one on each hand, on the fleshy part under my little fingers and they wouldn’t let go no matter how hard I tried to shake them off. They just bit in harder. Then I woke up. Weirdest one I’ve had in a while.
– Branwyn 37, Wausau, WI

Lauri: How recently did he become an ex? Sounds like you are trying to cleanse yourself of frustration and negativity that may still remain. The stove is interesting as it may point to plans, ideas, etc. that you’ve got cooking up but are hindered by the ex in some way, since it was his stove. The two mice are connected to two particular issues that are pestering and annoying and gnawing away at you right now. It’s annoying when we find a mouse in the house and even more annoying to find that said mouse has been gnawing away at the walls, wires or insulation! So these dream mice are letting you know that you’ve allowed something unwelcome into your psyche and it is time to exterminate it! They bit you because the situation must really “bite” as far as you’re concerned. It is significant that they bit your hands as that is the way your dream is showing you that this isn’t anything you can’t handle.

Branwyn replies: We’ve been divorced for over seven years. The two issues I have right now are the ongoing issues with him concerning our kids and having a really hard time finding a job. I would like to move away to find work but am kind of stuck with a rule that says I can only move a certain distance away from where he lives because of shared custody. It’s been frustrating for a long time. So yes, your interpretation fits perfectly with what’s happening in my life. Thank you so much! I’ll be more aware of those kinds of messages in my future dreams.

“Using your site makes it beyond easy to figure out my dreams. And now that I am getting their messages I have been able to make big changes in my life with confidence because I now know what my inner mind is telling me to do. Thank you so much for this amazing resource! I don’t know how I got along without it!” – Christi F. Phoenix, AZ

Do the people in your dreams ever morph into something or someone else? I know that’s happened in my dreams quite a few times. It’s not just a by-product of the bizarreness of our dreams… nay! T’is for a very good reason when Uncle Joe morphs into Winnie the Pooh.

When someone morphs into something or someone else in a dream, it is the way your wiser inner mind is showing you that person’s true colors. The audio below is a great example. It is from when I was on 98.7 The Peak in Phoenix, AZ with Chris and Amy. A gal called in with this very cool… and very telling dream about her ex. Also, listen out for the play on words her dream uses to make its point. Dreams love to use puns. If you can find one in your dream, you’ve found a good deal of the message!

As you can see, paying attention to and understanding your dreams can really give you an edge in life because it allows you to see your self, your current situation and the people around you in a brutally honest light. Now that Gina has gotten the clear and stern warning from her inner mind, she knows not to let this man back into her life.

Your dreams are such a powerful part of who you are.  They are giving you answers and direction, even warnings you need to know every night of your life. Why wouldn’t you want the ability to understand these important, even life-changing messages? I absolutely love your books! They are helping me sort my dreams out already.” – Belinda, Savannah, GA

You know how, whenever we have a problem to sort out or a decision to make, we tend to say, “Let me sleep on it?”  The truth is, what we are really saying is “Let me dream on it,” because when we are dreaming we are doing our deepest, most focused and insightful thinking.

One of the most common areas of our lives that causes us trouble and indecision is the relationship department.  So many of us get stuck in bad relationships, or continue to repeat our mistakes with bad relationship after bad relationship because we don’t listen to that wise inner voice in the back of our head that knows better.  When we ignore that voice during the day, it will speak even louder to us at night through our dreams… but rather than speaking in words, this inner voice speaks to us in stories, pictures, emotions and metaphors.  And when you can understand this night language, the message is often as clear as day.

Below is an audio from when I was on 105.3 KISS FM in Gainesville, FL.  A gal called in with a dream that was clearly commenting on her bad relationship.  Listen for the “Aha moment” she gets when she is finally able to understand that her dream is telling her that she needs to get out of the relationship…

Q & A with dream expert Lauri Loewenberg

By Laura Johnson | 08.12.10

What dreams may come …

Either Leonardo DiCaprio is the hottest man alive (speculation allowed here) or the film he stars in, “Inception” was No. 1 at the box office for three weekends in a row because people are becoming obsessed with dreams and what they mean for everyday life. As in the film, there are many out there who believe dreams are very important to existence. No matter what happens after you read these pages know dreams are the only thing in the world no one else can experience with you … unless for some reason you’re part of a science-fiction story.

Had a “naked” dream before? You know, the one where you’re standing in the middle of some crowded place? Well the naked one and the dream where you’re being chased are the most common. When we are young and we have a nightmare our parents assure us everything will be OK because, in a term, it was just a dream. However, there are some who believe our dreams are far more informative than we may believe.

The Weekender’s own Dream Zone columnist, Lauri Loewenberg agreed to be interviewed about the most personal dialogue we have with our subconscious n our dreams.

Weekender: What got you into this gig?

Lauri: I was able to remember my dreams when I was two. I have been documenting them since then. I started by drawing them and then moved to writing them down. In college I took a dream psychology course (although I don’t have a degree in this as there isn’t such a thing) and was extremely impressed at how much sense it made. Dreams are important, powerful and actually logical once you break them down. Because dreams are something everyone has, I knew I could help essentially everyone by getting into this job. I started it as a column and then moved to the radio and finally wrote a book. I am extremely passionate about what I do.

Weekender:Is this a full time job for you then?

Lauri: Yes, 24/7. Even when I’m sleeping! (laughs).

Weekender: So what is your official job title?

Lauri: Dream analysist n in a word, dreamologist

Weekender: So you’re not a psychic then?

Lauri: Not at all. I can’t predict the future. I simply help people to find their realities within a dream. I ask questions to help them find their own answers

Weekender: Do dreams really mean something or are they just excess thoughts?

Lauri: I can understand how it’s easy to dismiss dreams as nothing. But they are not nonsense. You need to give your dreams more credit than that n your subconscious more credit than that really. Yes, they are presented to you in a different language than you are used to but that just means you have to be able to crack the code. If you listen you can really solve your own problems.

Weekender: So dreams are not to be taken literally at all?

Lauri: Not at all. But they are always about you and about the present.

Weekender: When you’re gathering information about someone’s dream do certain things always mean the same thing (example: seeing bugs in a dream represents something is bugging you in real life) for every person?

Lauri: Those are referred to as archetypes and yes, they do mean pretty much the same thing for everyone. That’s the point of dream symbolism. But sometimes things can take a different turn which is why I always ask questions so each person can make their own conclusions. Like the common “naked” dreams means there is something we’re having anxiety about and we’re concerned how we may appear to others or it could mean we feel we’ve opened up or exposed ourselves too much.

Weekender: What about the other common dream, the “chase” dream?

Lauri: This dream interestingly enough, more commonly reoccurs with women than men. It usually means you are trying to avoid or get out of some sort of issue.

Weekender: Is it hard to listen to people’s dreams sometimes? Because it seems to us the only people who care about one’s dreams is the person themselves.

Lauri: I can see why they can be boring to others but I find it interesting because it’s like a big puzzle and a window into what’s going on with a person. I want to help people see what the issue is and show them advice about the dream.

Weekender: What about dreams that predict the future … almost premonition like? Why does that happen?

Lauri: Those are what’s referred to as EPS dreams. I’m personally a little skeptical of them. But I suppose anything is possible because time isn’t really linear. Also, when we’re in the REM stage of sleep our brain waves have slower frequency and could possibly pick up on things flowing around. Who’s to say?

Weekender: In your words, what are dreams?

Lauri: They are an emotional state n an honest reflection about who you are. I mean your eyes are closed the whole time they happen giving you a razor-like focus on yourself. Sometimes people don’t want to think about themselves, that can be too scary, but in dreams you are forced to do so.

Weekender: What about a nightmare? What does that reflect?

Lauri: Those are warnings. Only your own body can tell you what your need, and that’s what it does in dreams.

Weekender: In the wake of “Inception” dreams are becoming a hot topic. Do you think people will be able to infiltrate other people’s dreams in the future?

Lauri: I would not doubt it. With technology like an MRI scan we can watch dream patterns. In Japan they have created a dream VCR that reportedly records images from dreams. 100 years ago the Internet would have thought to be impossible. We’ll see.

Weekender: Why should we interpret our dreams?

Lauri: It’s really pretty practical, it’s not New Age at all. Dreams don’t ever lie, and in this world, that’s rare.

Every Wednesday I get to dissect a sex or relationship dream for my friends at  Em and Lo: Sex, Love and Everything In Between  This week’s dream is from a woman whose dearly departed husband has been appearing in her dreams…

My husband passed away this past January and since then I’ve had a lot of dreams about him. This is the last one I had two nights ago: I was standing inside a building and saw my car in a parking lot when it started to hail. I saw my husband run up to it and drive it away. Next thing I know, he’s standing beside me in the building and starts handing out grey T-shirts to strangers (three women) and then gives me one that has the word “Arizona” printed on it. I smile at him and say thanks and then we start walking further into the building with a small crowd of people. This is the second time I’ve dreamt of my car and my husband in a stormy situation. What does this mean?

Lauri: I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My heart is with you. I am glad you are paying attention to your dreams right now because they can actually be a nifty little built-in healing mechanism in that they allow you to safely sort out your feelings and thoughts as well as help you to move through the grief. So let’s delve into this dream and see how your inner nuts and bolts are helping you to work through this really tough time.

The building represents the relationship you built with your husband. The storm and the hail is your current emotional state. You are currently trying to “weather” a downpour of depression and perhaps even a sense of growing numb or cold to things that used to interest you.

The car is your ability to progress and move forward down your road of life, as well as your motivation and “drive” to keep going. It is in a parking lot because when your husband passed, I’m sure you felt as if your life stopped too. You also probably had to put on hold or “park” a lot of things in your life so that you could gather yourself. Your husband drives away in the car because you are still feeling like he has up and left you behind. This also reflects a deeper sense that he has gone on a different journey without you.

Then he’s suddenly beside you. I believe that shows your deeper belief that yes, even though he did leave you, he is still with you. The grey T-shirts represent the depression you are currently in, your sense that all the color has left your life. The three women are most likely different aspects of yourself such as mother, wife, career woman. They are the three biggest roles you play in life that now seem strange to you because when your husband died, it changed your identity and sense of self.

The shirt that says Arizona is interesting. Does Arizona hold any significance to you? Any personal associations? If not, perhaps Arizona is referred to in your dream because it is currently an embattled state and your inner mind may somehow connect Arizona’s battle with your inner battle. Also, Phoenix is the capitol of Arizona and a Phoenix is known to rise from the ashes… just as you will certainly rise again from your grey ashes of depression. That may very well be the main message this dream — or perhaps even your husband — is trying to convey to you right now.

I also believe the small crowd of people you walk into represents the small crowd of people who have gone through the loss of a spouse and that you may want to find and join some sort of bereavement support group, if you haven’t already. Being around and communicating with people who understand what you’re going through will help you to know that you are not alone, and more importantly, that you will be able to get through this and move on with your life. I believe this was a very powerful dream. And I wouldn’t doubt that your husband may indeed be trying to guide you through this heart-wrenching time.

Dreamer’s response: Thank you so much for responding to me. My dream makes so much sense to me now. I’m amazed at how your interpretation reflects exactly how I felt and am still feeling. I did feel as if he had abandoned me and went off onto another journey without me. For the last sixteen years, we’ve always done everything together. I know my husband is okay now because he told me this in a separate dream I had. You’re also correct that I’ve been having a hard time “finding” myself and figuring out who I am without him. The depression hits me really hard some days and things I used to love to do, I could totally care less about now. Most everything I did, I did for him and now he’s not here to do things for and it’s like, “What do I do with myself now?”

As I was just fixing to type out and tell you that the “Arizona” T-shirt made no sense to me either, it hit me that I have been to Arizona. Richard and I went on our last vacation together on 7/31/09 for seven days and part of the trip was to the Grand Canyon. I had this dream the early morning hours this past Saturday, 7/31. I’m wondering if he’s trying to tell me something or just wants me to remember the good times we had together. I don’t know…

As far as the grief support group, I have looked into it. I thought I was doing okay without attending one, but maybe, in light of this, I should attend after all.

Lady Gaga is known for her eccentric outfits and bizarre videos, so naturally her dreams do not disappoint either.  In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Lady Gaga revealed this rather interesting dream…

“I have this recurring dream sometimes where there’s a phantom in my home and he takes me into a room, and there’s a blond girl with ropes tied to all four of her limbs. And she’s got my shoes on from the Grammys. Go figure—pyscho. And the ropes are pulling her apart. I never see her get pulled apart, but I just watch her whimper, and then the phantom says to me, ‘If you want me to stop hurting her and if you want your family to be OK, you will cut your wrist.’ And I think that he has his own, like, crazy wrist-cutting device. And he has this honey in, like, Tupperware, and it looks like sweet-and-sour sauce with a lot of MSG from New York. Just bizarre. And he wants me to pour the honey into the wound, and then put cream over it and a gauze.”

Apparently she went to Deepak Chopra to get this dream analyzed.  I don’t know if he is schooled in Dream Psychology or not but I sure would love to know his take on it.  As you know, yours truly is schooled in Dream Psychology (Jungian to be exact) so here’s my take (Gaga, if you’re reading this… you’re welcome):

Phantom figures are common in dreams, often referred to to as “the shadow” in Dream Psychology, they represent either one’s dark side or what the dreamer perceives as a dark, negative force in their life.  This could be Gaga’s own personal demon such as if she suffers from depression or a drinking problem.  However, my suspicion is that this phantom represents her father’s heart condition.  Notice how the phantom tells her in the dream, ‘If you want me to stop hurting her and if you want your family to be OK, you will cut your wrist.’  Obviously, the blond girl is Gaga, she’s wearing her Grammy shoes after all!  It was Gaga’s success, symbolized by the Grammy’s, that enabled her to pay for her father’s heart transplant and receive the best care available.  She opened herself up (cutting her wrist) and gave of herself (the blood) so that her family would be okay.

The honey poured onto the wound in the dream is most certainly the sweetness of Gaga’s action towards her father, which healed him as well as the open wound her family was suffering not knowing if the father would get a new heart and if he did, would it save him.  I believe this recurring dream just may have come to Gaga in order to help her make sure she did all she could to save her dear old dad.

That’s what our dreams are there for, to help us make the best decisions for our lives.  And sometimes, those decisions can even save a life.

What do you think Lady Gaga’s dream was telling her?

Every Wednesday I get to dissect a sex or relationship dream for my friends at  Em and Lo: Sex, Love and Everything In Between  This week’s dream is from a woman who is wondering why she’s dreaming about being pregnant…

I’m female, single, and very NOT pregnant, but I recently had a dream in which I had just told the guy I’ve been seeing that I’m pregnant. We haven’t discussed being exclusive, but I haven’t been with anyone else since I met him two months ago. Anyways, I’m at his place when I tell him I’m pregnant and clearly recall that he immediately tells me that he won’t have sex with me anymore because I’m too “delicate” and “fragile.” I get upset and start to argue with him but he won’t let me get upset so he hugs and cuddles me to calm me and keeps whispering over and over again that I’m “delicate” and “fragile.” Sorry there was no sex in this dream, but it’s been preying on my mind. Thanks for the help! – Nina

Lauri: Dreams of pregnancy are very common, even when you aren’t hankerin’ for a hunk of bun in your oven. What it means is that something new is emerging in your life or within you. Seems to me that the idea of becoming exclusive with this guy is what is “growing inside of you.” Through this dream you are going through a dress rehearsal — so to speak — to see how it might go should you bring the idea of exclusivity up to him.

The dream takes place at his place because his place represents his mindset. You are wanting to get in there and see if he would be open to the idea you are pregnant with. He says he won’t have sex with you anymore because you are afraid he will not… ahem… “come together with you” on this idea. When he tells you that you are too delicate and fragile, it is really you telling yourself this. It’s not that you are too fragile to have sex, but perhaps too fragile to be turned down, which is why you argue in the dream. It is an argument with yourself whether you should bring the idea up or not. Just as he hugs you in the dream, you’d love for him to embrace this idea. I don’t think the dream is telling you not to do it, I believe it is letting you know that this is what you want — and warning you that if you do bring it up and he’s not hip to exclusivity, it might be a crushing blow… so be prepared.

Nina replies:  First, I have to thank your for your time and expertise in providing me an analysis. Second, wow.  I’m amazed at the ease and clarity with which you intepret the symbols and circumstances of my dream. Your interpretation hit all the notes of the my ponderings with this possible “relationship” and have subsequently brought my thoughts to focus. I am truly impressed and think it wonderful that you share your skills so generously.  Again, my sincere thanks.

Your dreams are such a powerful part of who you are.  They are giving you answers and direction, even warnings you need to know every night of your life. Every Wednesday I get to dissect a sex or relationship dream for my friends at  Em and Lo: Sex, Love and Everything In Between  This week’s dream is from a woman who is wondering why she’s dreaming about an old flame…

I have a reoccurring dream that is driving me crazy. I am in a seven year relationship but I keep having a dream about this guy I still have feelings for who I had a fling with. In this dream it’s always a family member telling me that “John Doe” is here to see me and I’ll get ready to see him but I never do. Something always ends up happening so I am unable to see him. When I’m with my significant other I find myself thinking about my old fling and actually wanting to see him. Please help!

Lauri: It’s common to continue to dream about someone who really “lit our fire” even decades after we were with them. As time goes on, the person no longer represents him or herself but rather the excitement and passion that we experienced when we were with them. In my research I’ve found that these old flames tend to pop into our dreams when our current relationship becomes a little too routine or when our life becomes hum drum. The inner mind will bring this person into our dreams to remind us that it is time to re-ignite our inner spark, time to bring the excitement and passion that person represents back into our waking life or current relationship. Remember, it’s the feelings that they are connected to, not the person.

But what concerns me though is that you said you had a fling with this person. Does that mean it was a brief romantic relationship during your current seven year relationship? Or did this fling precede your current relationship? Whatever the case, the fact that you are never able to see him in your dreams is where the message lies. You mentioned that you still have feelings for him and think of him. Your wiser inner self knows that – morally – you cannot “see him” anymore because you are in a committed relationship. And if you want this relationship to continue, you need to realize that “seeing him” is no longer an option. You are no longer together for a reason.

I suggest you take that energy, those feelings your dreams give you and turn it towards your boyfriend. Whenever Mr. Ex Fling shows up in your dream, harness those passionate feelings you wake up with and put them to good use, if ya know what I mean…wink, wink!

Those that know me best also know I love Meat Loaf… no, not the mish-mash of various meats and spices that is often topped with ketchup… Meat Loaf the singer!!  Back in high school when my friends were rockin’ out to REM, I was rocking out to Meat Loaf!  I even had a pet tarantula I named Meat Loaf.  Stop looking at me like that!  He was very furry and sweet.  I would also dress up as Columbia and go to The Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend so I could dance with whomever was playing Eddie that night (Meat Loaf’s character).

Anyhoo, this morning I had the opportunity of a lifetime and I got to actually talk to him on the phone!!  Here’s how it happened: A station I do every other Tuesday, WIFC in Wausau, WI with Dave and Stacy, posted on Facebook that they were going to be interviewing Meat Loaf.  I commented about how much I love him and even wear my Bat Out of Hell T-shirt ad nauseum (according to my husband).  So, being the thoughtful and wonderful morning duo that they are, invited me to come on the air with them when they interviewed Meatloaf.  He was very cool and has a new album coming out that I will absolutely be buying.  He even shared his recurring dream with me.  Listen below.  It was pure awesomeness!

My audio is a little low in the beginning but it gets louder just a little bit in…

Every Wednesday I get to dissect a sex or relationship dream for my friends at  Em and Lo: Sex, Love and Everything In Between  This week’s dream is from a woman who can’t stop dreaming about her ex…

Some background: My long-term boyfriend cheated on me and I broke up with him. It was the most upsetting thing that ever happened to me and I’m still not fully over it, but it was over a year ago and I’ve tried really hard to move on.

However, I’ve recently been having really vivid dreams about him. In them I’m in bed and lying in the same position I’m in; he comes into my room, seeming agitated, and after hesitating for a long time, lies down behind me and just holds my hand.

In the dream I am only pretending to be asleep while he does this; I feel annoyed and affronted that he has had the nerve to get in my bed and plan what I will shout at him when I ”wake up” — but I stay where I am and feel like I don’t want to move. It’s so real that I sometimes think he’s actually there. What’s my subconscious trying to tell me after all this time?   - Caroline

Lauri: Your dream is showing you that, in fact, you haven’t moved on at all. Notice how in the dream you don’t move, you stay in the same position. Your dream has given form to where you are emotionally: There has been “no movement” towards healing or closure, and your “position” on the matter has not changed. You are probably stuck in the mindset of a victim and can’t see past the loss you are feeling; you did say, “I stay where I am and feel like I don’t want to move.”

Your dream is showing you that the choice is yours as to whether you remain where you are in misery or actually make an honest effort to move forward toward healing. In the dream your ex is always behind you; this is your dreaming mind trying to tell you that he is behind you in your past and you need to start looking forward. The pretending you are doing in the dream is the pretending you are doing in real life. You do need to “wake up” and realize what you are doing to yourself.

Everything that you are saying to him in your head in the dream, I want you to write that all out tonight at bedtime right before you turn out your light. You have internalized your pain for far too long and now is the time to get it out of your psyche and onto paper. Take up as many pages in your journal as you need to. Get it all out, curse-swear-scream it all out as you write, get all that pain out.

Once you have exhausted yourself, go ahead and rip those pages out of your journal and toss them in the trash. This is symbolic of ridding yourself of the useless pain and frustration you have been holding onto all this time; it is worthless to you, it is trash. Then turn out your light, go to sleep, and see what kind of dream you get tonight. I’ll bet you’ll have a dream showing your progress! I’ll also bet you’ll wake up feeling a lot better and ready to take on the future. Remember, it is impossible to move forward when you are holding on to what is behind you.

Caroline replies: Thanks so much for this. It all makes such a massive amount of sense – I actually kind of cried a bit when I read it because I know it’s so true! I’ve tried a lot of different things to get past what happened, but I’m going to try your advice before bed and see if it helps. If any more positive dreams happen I’ll let you know! Once again, thank you so much – you’ve really clarified in my mind what the problem is and now I feel able to take action and solve it.

Your dreams are a built-in healing mechanism.  If you are trying to move on from pain in your recent past, let your dreams show you the way!!  Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll easily understand your dreams every morning and get a HUGE edge in life.
